Chapter Twenty-Two
Stratton
Stratton sat in one of the two chairs that faced the chiefâs desk. He obsessively checked his watch for what felt like the hundredth time today. He planned to keep his lunch date with Astria without making a big deal of it with Brett. But so far, all heâd been able to think about was Astria.
For the past few hours, heâd gone over and over their encounter this morning, wishing heâd have acted normal and not like she was the first beautiful woman heâd been near. Wishing that he could figure out why she seemed so familiar to him. Moreover, he wished he could have a do-over and not be tongue-tied and end up wearing Jeffreyâs coffee.
When Stratton got to work, heâd changed into one of the backup outfits he kept in his locker and then asked one of the other officers to drop his coffee-stained clothes by the dry cleaners since it was on their patrol route anyway.
âThis is a piece of crap,â said Brett as he sat behind his desk, trying to work on his computer. He wasnât the best with technology and had plenty of officers on staff who were far better, but pride left him trying to access autopsy files himself.
Stratton could have offered to help but he knew Brett would turn him down, so he sat there, doing his best not to laugh.
The phone on Brettâs desk rang, the sound echoing through the room. He tried to answer only to end up hitting the wrong button and hanging up on the person on the other end.
âI hate these phones,â Brett said. âTheyâre older than me.â
The age of the phones wasnât the problem. The guy trying to work them was.
Stratton liked Brett. He was a stand-up guy who, when not being the chief of police, was the head enforcer of Jeffreyâs wolf pack. That meant Brett was the one called in to do the heavy lifting when it came to pack rules and violations. He was also charged with keeping Jeffrey safe, not that his help was required in that area.
Jeffrey was a very capable alpha, even if that looked somewhat questionable when he was around his wife.
The phone rang again.
Stratton sat up in his chair, punched the lit-up button on the bottom of the phone, and then lifted the receiver, handing it to Brett.
âThanks,â said Brett, taking the phone. He greeted the caller and was quiet a moment. âYouâre sure? Right then. Thanks, Doc.â He hung up, his gaze swinging to Stratton. âThat was Dr. Hartshorn. Heâs done with the bear autopsy.â
Stratton continued to lean forward. âNecropsy.â
Brett cocked his head to the side. âWhat?â
âAn autopsy on an animal is called a necropsy,â stated Stratton as he sat back in the chair and brought his foot up, crossing his ankle over his other knee. âWhat did he find?â
A tic started in Brettâs jaw. âIâm starting to see why it is you annoy Jeffrey so much.â
Shrugging, Stratton watched his boss carefully. âWhat did Donte have to say?â
âHe doesnât think whatever killed the bear was human,â said Brett, sounding tired.
